Synar is an annual scientifically valid surveillance research study of retail tobacco establishments. The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) requires conducting Synar tobacco sales compliance checks as a stipulation for funding the Federal Substance Abuse Prevention, Treatment, and Recovery Block Grant. The Wyoming Association of Sheriffs and Chiefs of Police (WASCOP) collects similar administrative data about tobacco sales-law compliance checks. State-level WASCOP compliance check results are presented elsewhere on this site. In 2020, the FDA and Wyoming raised the legal age for tobacco purchases to age 21.
